BBC Four
Royal Institution Christmas Lectures
OVERVIEW
“The Truth About AI" involved creating the title sequence for the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures on BBC Four. Working as part of a team of animators, we each developed symbolic interpretations of artificial intelligence to form an opening sequence. I worked on “monkey scene,” using the infinite monkey theorem as a metaphor for AI. While my collaborator produced the 3D monkey models, I created supplementary assets, constructed the full shot, and completed the compositing in Adobe After Effects. This shot was later selected as the primary still displayed on the large screen throughout the Christmas Lectures.

The visual style blends cyberpunk-inspired digital tones with a subtle steampunk influence, drawing on the charm of old mechanical wind-up toys. This mixture of futuristic vibrancy and analogue character supports the overarching theme of AI as something simultaneously cutting-edge and strangely familiar and unsophisticated. A tailored colour palette, designed to harmonise with the physical lecture set, was shared across the animation team to ensure consistency and coherence throughout the entire sequence.
