Forest Bathing - Typographical Animation
Project type
Typographical Animation
Date
February - April 2024
Location
London
This project was my response to the International Typographic Awards (ISTD) 2024, where I chose a single brief, and answered using moving visuals with a focus on typography. The Joybringer brief challenged designers to explore strategies for happiness. Drawing from personal experiences and research into mental health, I focused on "Forest Bathing" (Shinrin-Yoku), a Japanese practice proven to reduce stress, boost cardiovascular health, and alleviate anxiety.
Targeting young adults, who spend the least time in nature despite its benefits, I designed an immersive video to bridge the digital and natural worlds. The narrative begins in a cold, artificial environment with blocky typography and monochromatic tones, transitioning into vibrant forest visuals with organic textures and flowing type. This transformation symbolizes the journey from disconnection to reconnection with nature.
I used realistic visuals, textured typefaces, and a warm, evolving colour palette to evoke emotional resonance. Each scene is supported by typographic storytelling.
Ultimately, this Typographical Animation seeks to inspire young adults to engage with nature, illustrating its profound mental and physical benefits through a visually compelling and sensory-rich video experience.
